Ear tipped feral cats. Recognizing feral cats feral cats who have been altered have a tipped or notched ear. I think that would be. The tipped ear contributes to the cat's safety as it signals to animal control officers and neighbors that the cat has been fixed and is being cared for.
Ear notching or ear tipping is a universal sign that a feral cat has been spayed or neutered (desexed), vaccinated and then returned to its colony. The rspca believes that when neutered, each animal should have its left ear 'tipped' to allow for future identification of neutered animals. But i haven't read anywhere that a group tips one ear for males, and the other ear for females.
Doesnt ear tipping hurt the kitty? Vaccinations are provided as arranged in advance. You can get in touch by calling 03000 12 12 12 or emailing info@cats.org.uk.
What does an ear notch or ear tip look like? Precious paws recommends that all feral cats, while still under general anesthetic for spaying or neutering, have the top quarter inch of their left ear removed. I could get a cute collar and do the big embroidered letters in a contrasting color, but it would be much less noticable than bold black on neon yellow against dark fur.
Feral cats are cats who live outside without much human contact. Veterinarians notch or tip the ear during spay/neuter surgery which helps to identify a trap, neuter, return (tnr) cat from a distance. This procedure is only done under anesthesia so that the cat doesnt feel pain, and the ear tip heals quickly.
New members of the clipped ear society! It tells people that the cat has been sterilised under a tnr program. Eartipping is an effective and universally accepted method to identify a spayed or neutered and vaccinated community cat.
The ear heals up quickly and the tipped ear doesnt. I would expect that a collar on an ear tipped cat would make it pretty clear that she wasn't feral and might make people look into it, but i'm really worried that won't be enough. In advance stages, ear mite infections give off a distinct odor.
The rspca recommends the removal of part of the left ear by a straight cut, 6mm (1/4) from the tip. This image shows a siamese tabby feral cat with blue eyes and a tipped ear. Infested with ear mites, my cats will shake their head frequently, rub their head along any hard surface (carpet is the best choice so far) and scratch their ears till they bleed or the hair falls out.
It also often identifies them as being part of a cared colony. Proportionally smaller in a kitten) identifies that the cat has been neutered and treated, when later seen from a distance. They generally will not allow themselves to be touched or often even approached by people.
An ear tip is a visual indicator that a cat has previously been altered and vaccinated. It is done under general anesthesia at the same time that the cat is spayed/neutered. Its part of tnr, which means trap, neuter, return.
It is a vital signal for the community and allows organizers to manage the feral cat community better. The procedure is performed by a licensed veterinarian, typically during the spay/neuter surgery. If you think youve spotted a feral cat without a missing left ear tip, get in touch with cats protection to see if they can come to trap and neuter them and then return them to their original territory.
There is little or no bleeding involved, and it is not painful to the cat. The tip of one ear (~.25 inches) is surgically removed. Definitely looks like an ear tip.
Initially there was enormous opposition to ear tipping because it somehow fell under the same category as cat delawing, dog ear cropping or tail docking. Ear mites can drive my cats crazy. I notice the left ear tipped on almost all other feral cats seen here on flickr!
Once this procedure is done, these neutered feral cats are easily identified even from a distance. Most feral cats are very skittish, and it is difficult to get close enough to see if a male has been neutered or look for a tattoo or spay scar on a female. But if it's on left ear, and doesn't look like a small accidental tear, or a bit of frostbite (which yours doesn't)i'm 99.9% sure it's an ear tip.
I am not far behind this craziness! These cats can then be returned to the site. Ear tipping is a humane way to show that a cat has been altered (spayed or neutered).
In my area the right ear is tipped for both males and females. There are some occasions where feral cats are considered to be a nuisance. It heals very quickly, causing minimal pain and recovery.
